ANOD ReVu 1: AIR TV 5

Due to work and commitments to NNL, I have not watched a fansub for leisure in over a year, with the sole exception being overnight fansub marathoning at AnimeNorth. Instead, when I am tired, I plop on my couch, turn to channel 210, and watch some R1 dubs. After a long day of fansubbing and actual Japanese language studying, the last thing I want to do is listen to more Japanese.
“ANOD ReVu” will be a running column about what I watch on ANOD. The good part is that ANOD viewers in Canada have the opportunity to watch stuff before it comes out on R1. It’s obviously full of series which are not-so-cutting-edge, but it’s an excellent way for me to catch up on what I never got the opportunity to watch.
This column is not intended to provide full reviews, hence the term ReVus. These ReVus won’t go too much into the stories and plots. There are a ton of other blogs that do that. I’ll simply focus on the dub itself and my own minor observations.

I have only seen AIR Movie in Japanese. Reikoku gave me AIR TV from Triad a loooong time ago, but I never got around to watching it. This is the episode is where it starts to get a little spicy. Misuzu starts crying, Minagi starts yapping, blah blah blah.
It’s not out in R1 yet, so that’s why I picked it as the review for today.
A few minutes in, the worst dub of the series to date is presented to us. This involves two girls enjoying Yukito’s puppet performance. ADV doesn’t have any children voice actors, and it shows, since the two girls sound like people I used to have a crush on in high school. Pardon me, but they also sound very white. It bugs me… they don’t have anyone with a minority accent (except Texan ranchers), but I wish they did.
Then the episode is Minagi, Minagi, and more Minagi. They gave her a mature voice because she is tall. Unfortunately, mature voices really don’t suit a show where everyone has super-deformed faces in order to maximize the moe factor. I almost got used to it at the very end where they talk on the roof. Almost.
Luci Christian portrays Haruko as much more calming woman. This contrasts episode 1 where her emotions were quite blatant. I liked this version of Haruko, actually. She’s still the #1 dub. Too bad everyone insists on calling her “Huh-ruuuuuuu-ko”.
Gao isn’t said once. Neither is nihaha. Again, I never saw the original, so I don’t know what’s going on there. Probably a localization gaffe. Otherwise, Misuzu remains the second-best dub overall.
It’s the best episode so far story-wise, but the worst one dub-wise. At least the show is getting sort of interesting now…

If by ‘Second best’ you mean in an Anime that was horribly dubbed overall, then I can agree.
