Sony Computer Entertainment has announced their intention to begin selling a new 40 GB model of the Playstation 3 at the low price of 39980 JPY (As of today’s exchange rate, 341.42 USD) starting November 11th. The currently available 20 GB and 60 GB models of the PS3 will also experience a price drop to 44980 JPY (380.04 USD) and 54980 JPY (469.26 USD), respectively, in accordance with the release of the 40 GB model, effective October 17th.
The new model will come in two colors, clear black and ceramic white. It will be slightly smaller and slightly (about one kilogram, or 2.2 pounds) lighter than the currently existing models, and will use only 280 watts of power, opposed to 380 watts for currently existing models. The new model will be able to play Blu-Ray discs, DVDs and CDs. It also supports HDMI, 1080p, x.v.Color and DeepColor. It comes with IEEE 802.11b/g wireless LAN and Bluetooth 2.0.
A new Bluetooth controller, complete with rumble, [DUALSHOCK 3], is also slated for release on the 11th of November for 5,500 JPY (46.95 USD).
However, due to the low pricing of this new model, it will NOT be backwards compatible with the PS2, and will only have two USB ports.
Plans for release on the international market are either nonexistent or unconfirmable.
