Shinkai Makoto to produce new animated short

The renowned animator of all things railroad and lens-flarey has signed up to produce an animated short that may well feature neither.

Entitled Neko no Shuukai (‘The assembly of cats’), the one minute short is a comedy about a cat and his owners as told from the perspective of the cat. As the short will be showing as part of a festival on national broadcaster NHK, Shinkai notes that a particular effort was made to keep the animation style soft and friendly as in the sort of anime he watched himself when he was young.
I’m a little disappointed to hear that it won’t be graced with his trademark pastel colours and beautiful special effects, but the faux-Ghibli animation and the Wagahai wa neko de aru-esque premise sound pretty interesting too – at least, interesting enough to justify the 60 seconds it’ll take to watch it.

I seriously hope this doesn’t lack trains.

Actually this looks a lot MORE interesting than his previous works. I think the way he did his films it was less of a trademark and more of a “hello, got any other ideas?” thing. And hay, I think I recognize that NHK newscaster, the one who’s 30-something but looks alarmingly old.
